Wild Trout Fly Fishing
Situated at high altitude, the rivers and stillwaters at Vrederus Wild Trout are cold and pristine – making for well-oxygenated, healthy water. Free spawning rainbow trout populate the runs and pools of our mountain streams, and our stillwaters are stocked with top-class Martin Davies brood, which survive warmer summers and grow over 10lbs.
Birding at Vrederus
The birding and scenery around Vrederus is something else. Not only is there a great variety of bird species, there are excellent numbers of certain rare and restricted species to see – most notably the blue, wattled and crowned cranes and waterfowl. The lake, rocky ridges and vleis will keep birders busy for ages.
Photography Opportunities
An unexpected joy at Vrederus is the opportunities for landscape photography. The continually changing seasons and cloud formations make Vrederus one of the most photogenic landscapes in the country and whether you are an amateur photographer armed with a smart phone or passionate about lighting, you are guaranteed to leave with some of the best landscape shots you will ever take.

The grassland biome of the Eastern Cape highlands is dotted with kloofs and outcrops, making for diverse communities of flowering plants.
Hikes and Walks through the Eastern Cape highlands
Vrederus offers various hikes and walks around the farm and surrounding area including unique Bushman Painting sites. It’s a great way to see the landscapes, birdlife and take in the many different views available.
Mountain Biking
The gravel farm roads and mountain passes offer uniquely isolating mountain biking options. Cyclists can adventure up Naude’s Nek pass, down the Pot River pass and everywhere in between.
Overlanding
The are between Barkly East and Maxclear is known for the 8-passes challenge, featuring South Africa’s highest mountain passes, some of which require 4×4 and low-range vehicles. Vrederus is open to 4×4 overlander farm pitches passing through the area.
